News from the Nest August 2016

Dear sponsors, members & friends,

Our volunteers have been extremely during the summer months and our  ‘Nest’ has been very full. We were all incredibly moved when the day  came for young Ioannis and his family to return home after staying with  us since September 2015. I am very pleased to hear that he has settled  very well and looks forward to going back to school. A huge thank you  for your trust and support which make it all possible.

Nest guests (June-August):

  • Marilena, who stayed several times with us, after years of  treatment following osteosarcoma of the jaw, has graduated from the  University of Cyprus and is going to Leeds University for a Master’s  degree, after yet another operation. The Charity in Cyprus and  Alkionides UK will help with a scholarship.
  • Chrystalla who had treatment for ovarian cancer.
  • Pambos who returned for a check-up for an eye condition.
  • Elena for a thyroid operation.
  • Maroulla who has osteosarcoma of the leg and breast cancer.
  • Young Savvina observed by Great Ormond Street Hospital.
  • Nine-year-old Styliana who was admitted to King’s College Hospital and had an operation on her intestine.
  • Anthos with a serious eye condition.
  • Young Alexandros who was born with an eye abnormality.
  • Baby Karlos who was born with a syndrome that causes very special needs came to Great Ormond Street Hospital.
  • Konstantia, a mother of two very young children, who was afflicted  with breast cancer as her mother before her and came for an operation.
  • Elena is now our long-term patient, waiting for a liver transplant  so she can survive amyloidosis. Her brother and mother had the same  genetic illness and had transplants.

In Birmingham our team cover hotel accommodation  for returning amyloidosis patients and help with living expenses for  Elena in London. They plan to thank Queen Elizabeth Hospital by  providing necessary equipment.
